In summer the heat is very severe. The earth begins to bake like a round plate of iron. People sweat all over. Flowers, plants, trees, creepers begin to scorch in extreme heat of the sun. Men, animals and birds all crave for water to satisfy their thirst. Nature seems to be lifeless. Everyone looks at the sky and cries for rain.
The rainy season comes after summer. In India it generally begins from the middle of June and lasts till the end of September. This period of rain is also called “Choumasa” (the period of four months).
With the advent of the rainy season, nature seems to get a new life. The climate becomes mild and people get relief from the scorching heat. We see green trees. green grass and green fields all around. During this season the sky is generally covered with clouds. Lightning occasionally flashes in dark clouds. Sometimes it rains continually for days together and even the sun is not seen for many days. Weather becomes cool and pleasant. Seeing the dark clouds of rain the peacocks dance and scream in glee. Rivers, ponds and ditches are full of water. The nights become joyful with the croaking of frogs and the chirping of crickets.
During the pleasant time of the rainy season the festival of 'Teej' is celebrated. Swings are attached to the trees or the roofs of the houses. The women swing and sing ‘Melhar' to welcome the rainy season. Everybody feels happy.
In rainy season sweet juicy mangoes are found in plenty. This fruit is useful to health. Some times the sight of a rainbow in the sky, enhances the beauty of the weather. Children look at it in joy and wonder.
Though rainy season has many advantages yet it has some disadvantages. Malaria develops during these days. Some times heavy rains may cause floods in many parts of our country and bring miseries to people. In spite of all this, its importance can not be denied. If spring is the king of seasons, the rainy season is their queen.
