The Tajmahal is one of the Seven Wonders of the world. Its beauty is marvellous. This memorial was built more than three hundred and fifty years ago. The Tajmahal is a rare edifice in white marble. It is a symbol of immortal love.
This graceful monument was built in 1631 A.D. It still stands in its same glory on the right bank of the Yamuna river in Agra. It was built by emperor Shahajahan in memory of his beloved wife, Mumtaz Mahal. It was completed by twenty thousand labourers in twenty years. Architects and artists were called from distant countries to build this building.
This excellent memorial stands at a distance of three kilometers from Agra fort. It has a picturesque surrounding. There are beautiful gardens on its three sides and a clear stream of the Yamuna river flows to its fourth side. Its main gate is built of red stone. Verses from the Holy Quaran are engraved on it. Then there is a small museum, where the arms of Mughal emperors are kept. In front of the main building of the Tajmahal, there is a beautiful sight of a lovely garden with many lawns. Cypress trees and rose buds enhance the beauty of these lawns. Fountains and ponds add all the more beauty of the Taj. The height of the splendid white dome is 275 feet. Besides, there are four small domes around the big one. Beautiful pictures of art are painted on the walls of these domes and the main building of the Tajmahal.
Under the big dome there are the graves of Shahajahan and Mumtaz Mahal. Beautiful lattice of marble are constructed around these graves. These graves are shown to the visitors in the candle light.
The splendour of the Tajmahal increases very much in the full moon light of the autumn (sharad). Its calm and shining dome in the moon-lit night allures everyone. People come from far and near to see its marvelous beauty.
The Tajmahal, the peerless monument is remembered with love and honour not only in india but also in the whole world. This valuable architecture is a glory of our country.
