Onam is a very popular festival in Kerala. It comes
in the month of August. The people of Kerala celebrate
Onam in honour of their King Mahabali. Mahabali was
a kind and just king. People worshipped him like God.
The Gods did not like this. So they turned him out of his
kingdom. But the king requested the Gods to allow him
to visit his dear people. The Gods granted his wish. So
King Mahabali visits his people once a year. The people
of Kerala celebrate his annual visit as Onam. People
decorate their houses and make idols of King Mahabali.
On the day of Onam, a rangoli of flowers is made. It is
called Kolam. Kolam is made to welcome King Mahabali.
A special dish called payasam is prepared. In the
evening boat races and mock fights are organised. The
women and girls dance around lamps. All houses ar
decorated with colourful lights.
