Essay on Mahatma Gandhi in English

Great souls have always made India a sacred country. Great persons like Lord Mahavir, Gautam Budha. Mahatma Gandhi, etc. have taken birth on this land. Mahatma Gandhi had been very famous during the recent times. He loved truth, non- violence and humanism. People called him "Bapu".

The full name of Mahatma Gandhi was Mohan Dass Karam Chand Gandhi. He was born at Porbander in Gujrat on October 2, 1869 A.D. His father's name was Karam Chand Gandhi and the name of his mother was Putli Bai. His mother was a religious lady. Mohan Das as a child was much impressed with her character. Gandhiji was married to Kasturba at the age of thirteen years. He passed the Matriculation examination at the age of eighteen years. Thereafter he sailed for England to study law to become a barrister.

After qualifying himself as a barrister he came back to India. After some days, he went to South Africa for a case. In Africa the condition of Indians was very wretched. The English men committed atrocities upon them. Gandhi tried hard to improve their condition.

When Gandhi came back to India from South Africa, the rein of Congress came into his hands. He used the weapons of non-violence and non-cooperation for success in the struggle against the atrocities of the Britishers. In 1930, he started the Salt Agitation. In 1942, he declared 'Quit India' against the English people. At last the Britishers were forced to set our country free on August 15, 1947.

Gandhiji wanted to establish Ram Rajya in the country. Many times he observed fast to establish unity between the Hindus and the Muslims. By his efforts the untouchables got their proper place in the country and they were called Harijans.

Some people did not like his policy to please the Muslims. On January 30, 1948, he was shot dead by a young man named Nathu Ram Godse. The whole world was shocked. Of course Gandhiji was one of the foremost persons of the world. Indians still remember the beneficence of their past leader.
