Essay on "Raksha Bandhan" in English

Raksha Bandhan has an important place among those significant functions and festivals which are celebrated by Hindu society. People celebrate it with great reverence. The festival of Raksha Bandhan is celebrated on Purnima (the full moon day) of Shravan month (Hindi month). So it is also called "Shravani". This festival is a symbol of the holy love between a brother and a sister. On this day sisters tie Rakhis (holy threads) to the hands of their brothers and the brothers promise to protect their sisters. On this day men change their yagyopaveet (holy thread). On this occasion, different types of pakwans (fried eatables) and other eatables are prepared.

It is said about this festival that on this day, God in a dwarfish form broke the pride of Bali, the king of demons. He begged Bali a piece of land measuring three foot steps. By one foot he measured the whole earth, by the second step he measured the sky and by the third step he measured Bali himself. Then Bali was bound and was sent to hades. So it is famous that for the victory of gods, Indrani tied rakhies to their hands.

The other saying about the festival is that when Sultan Bahadur Shah besieged Chittorgarh, Maharani Karnavati sent a rakhi to Humayan to protect her. Emperor Humayun for the sake of Rakhi forgot the past enmity and came to protect the Maharani.

Now a day's the festival of Raksha Bandhan rakhies of different colours are sold at shops of different places. On this occasion faith, warmth, hope and affection for brothers awake in the hearts of sisters. It teaches men to help the weak unselfishly. We should celebrate this festival with the same idea forgetting our self-differences.
