Essay on Janmashtami in English

Janmashtami has an important place among the main festivals of Hindus. It is the chief festival of the rainy season. This holy festival is celebrated as the 'Birthday ceremony of Lord Krishna'. This sacred festival of Janmashtami is performed on the eighth day of Krishna Paksha (the dark half part of a lunar month) of Bhadrapad (Hindi month). Thousands of years ago, on this day Lord Krishna was born. Since then this festival is performed every year.

Asthmi (the eighth day) of Bhadrapad is celebrated in memory of Lord Krishna. On this day all Hindus keep fast with great love and devotion. The peep-holes of Lord Krishna's life are exhibited at different places. Temples and houses are decorated. People worship and sing praises of God in temples and houses. At midnight, when Lord Krishna was born, devoted persons break their fast. They distribute the pershad (offered food to God) and also take it themselves.

Many days before this occasion different types of sweets and fried eatables are prepared in houses. Temples at different places are decorated with electric bulbs of different colours. Superb decoration of temples and the peep-holes is to be seen at Vrindaban, the birthplace of Lord Krishna.

For Hindus, the holy festival of Janmashtami has double importance as it has the spiritual as well as the cultural value. Through this festival, we learn devotion, abandonment, charity, hard work, justice and truth from the life of a Lord Krishna. Every year this festival paves our path for new instigation, new courage and new resolution. The ideal character of Lord Krishna should be propogated. We should celebrate the whole festival with full devotion.
